Basic Income Europe is an editorially independent platform dedicated to rigorous, evidence-based coverage of Universal Basic Income across Europe and the world.
Basic Income Europe was founded as the official knowledge hub of the 2013 European Citizens Initiative for Unconditional Basic Income - a campaign that gathered 1,285,000 verified signatures across 24 EU member states.
Since the initiative concluded, the platform has continued as an independent editorial resource, tracking developments in UBI policy, research, and pilots worldwide. We do not advocate for any specific policy position. Our commitment is to the evidence.
All research summaries and analysis pieces are reviewed by at least one independent researcher before publication. We distinguish clearly between peer-reviewed findings, preliminary pilot data, and opinion. Funding sources are disclosed for all commissioned content.
We follow the European Science Journalism guidelines and adhere to a strict separation between editorial content and any institutional partnerships.
The ECI for Unconditional Basic Income was one of the most successful citizens initiatives in EU history. Launched in January 2013, it called on the European Commission to explore the introduction of a basic income across member states. While it did not reach the required threshold in enough member states to trigger a formal Commission response, it catalysed a lasting European policy conversation - and this platform.
